Dex Kjerstad has the makings of a corner outfielder at the next levels, and the sound he makes with a wood bat is the kind you like to hear.

Kjerstad might have some of the strongest hands I’ve seen in the 2010 draft cycle. Kjerstad shows you this in his BP video, where his hands generate above-average bat speed with wood. Kjerstad keeps the barrel in the hitting zone for a long time, while maintaining a compact stroke. Hitters like that generally have a lot of projection going for them because they should be able to produce home run and gap power.

Kjerstad also shows some other positive signs, such as the two-handed finish, the quiet head, the aggressive cut, and the firm front. As for other aspects of his game, he should throw well enough for right field in the future. Speed will be gradually be pro average, better underway, and enough to play everyday. Kjerstad (Canyon Randall, Amarillo, TX) has a commitment to the University of Texas, where he would likely compete for immediate playing time.

At 6-2, 205, he’s not the 6-5 type of giant pro teams like in their corner outfielders, but if he hits, it’s not going to matter. Kjerstad should have some physical projection remaining and is an intriguing prospect for 2010 and beyond.
